Sigma introduces a lightweight and versatile zoom lens with the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN |

Sigma 18-50mm F2,8 DC DN | Contemporary for Z- and E-mount -- it's their first zoom lens designed specifically for mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensors. The focal length range corresponds to a 35mm-equivalent 27-75mm. The speed is F2.8 throughout.

Three high-precision, bright-molded aspheres and a reduction in the number of optical elements overall (13 elements in 10 groups) are said to combine high imaging quality with light weight. As with other lenses, Sigma makes use of in-camera correction of aberrations such as distortion and vignetting. The lens turns out to be very light at only 290g. Flare and ghosting are reduced by a Super Multi-Layer Coating (SML).
The optics feature a fast and "nearly" silent autofocus, driven by a stepper motor. Auto focus with automatic eye detection used in newer mirrorless cameras is supported.
With a magnification of up to 1:2.8, it can also be used for close-up photography up to a closest focusing distance at 12.1cm. In telephoto, the minimum focusing distance is 30cm. The aperture consists of 7 blades. The filter diameter is 55mm.
Special materials were chosen in the manufacturing of the lens to achieve robust properties despite the light weight. For example, the lens barrel (which extends when zooming, by the way) is made of TSC (Thermally-Stable-Composite) polycarbonate, which is said to have thermal conductivity similar to that of aluminum, while some components inside are deliberately made of metal, for greater strength with less material usage. This should allow the optics to withstand both changing temperatures and more intensive use.
