After the success of the first two seasons, Sky has now ordered another season of the high-end series "Das Boot" from Bavaria Fiction. After the first two seasons are now available in UltraHD with Dolby Atmos, Sky is going even further with the third season. According to Sky, it will be the first series worldwide to be produced and streamed in 8K with 3D Dolby Atmos sound. This is made possible by a cooperation between Sky and Samsung, whose QLED 8K SmartTVs will show "The Boat" via Sky Q in 8K (7,680 x 4,320 pixels). Sky has not yet announced whether HDR will also be supported.
Mike Henkelmann, Director Marketing Consumer Electronics at Samsung:
With 8K technology, we are truly pioneering high-definition imaging technology and offering both filmmakers and viewers unprecedented image quality. We are convinced that the gripping story of &The Boat& will take full advantage of the technology and that Sky and Samsung will be able to offer viewers a very special experience.
Samsung will benefit from the deal by finally being able to offer real 8K content (not just AI upscaled 4K) for its high priced 8K TVs to convince potential buyers of the future 8K format. However, questions remain about the real resolution ( If 8K TVs are not 8K - Samsung&s problem with resolution ).
The second season of "Das Boot" had its premiere in Germany in April on the Pay TV channel Sky 1. Producers of the third season of "Das Boot" are Moritz Polter ("Spotless", "Freud") and Jan S. Kaiser ("Hotel Lux", "Brecht") for Bavaria Fiction, as well as Marcus Ammon, Frank Jastfelder and Julia Jaensch for Sky Deutschland, Jason Simms for Sky Studios. Caroline Fischer (Bavaria Fiction) acts as producer. NBC Universal Global Distribution is responsible for world sales.
