Skydio has introduced its second drone, which is significantly cheaper than the ![]() Skydio 2.0
It uses 6 special 200° cameras with a total resolution of 45 megapixels to capture the surroundings. Using a special Nvidia Jetson TX2 CPU with 256 GPU cores, a 3D model of the surroundings is reconstructed from the images to avoid obstacles or follow objects independently - even if there is no visual contact. According to the manufacturer Skydio 2.0 is clearly better than DJI&s Mavic 2 drones. The autopilot is supposed to be able to replace a real pilot/camera operator by object recognition or the optional beacon and also helps with manual flying by avoiding obstacles automatically (e.g. when flying backwards). ![]() Skydio App The Skydio 2.0 is up to 58 km/h fast with a flight time of up to 23 minutes. There are three ways to control the Skydio 2.0: via Smartphone App (iOS/Android), via the (optional) controller, which is identical to the one of ![]() The controller extends the range from about 180 meters (per smartphone) to 3.5km, the beacon to 1.5km. The Beacon is an innovative new way to control a drone - so the Skydio 2.0 can follow the beacon automatically using the built-in GPS transmitter as well as be repositioned in the sky by the user via drag&drop. The type of follow mode can also be easily changed at the touch of a button. ![]() Intuitive control via Beacon Mounted on a 3-axis gimbal, the camera records 4K HDR video at up to 60fps (plus 120 fps FullHD video) and HDR photos with 12 megapixels (4,056 x 3,040) and a range of 13 f-stops dynamics - using Sony&s IMX577 1/2.3" 12.3MP CMOS image sensor. Skydio even links a special external ![]() ![]() ![]() Picture quality comparison Skydio and DJI Mavic The Skydio 2 will be manufactured in America and will be delivered in November at a price of 999 dollars, but it can already be pre-ordered at a price of 100 dollars - Beacon and controller are not included in the price and each cost 149 dollars extra. However, the offer only applies to the USA and Canada for the time being - it is not yet certified for other regions. A soon expansion to other zones is planned. Interesting is the promise of Skydios to repair or replace a drone, which is flown in the context of the official safety guidelines and crashes, free of charge. It will be exciting to see whether Skydio can establish itself as a real alternative to DJI with better flight intelligence - provided, of course, that the system is relatively flawless. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Skydio 2.0 Drohne: Eine ernsthafte Konkurrenz für DJIs Mavic 2 |
