Small Nikon Z camera with RED technology to compete with Sony FX3?

[15:07 Fri,14.March 2025   by blip]

More exciting than many TV series, it should be for camera enthusiasts to follow the marriage of RED with Nikon - since the announcement of the takeover almost a year ago, a kind of episodic narrative has gradually unfolded. Two rather different protagonists are embarking on a common path: road movies always attract, but where is the journey heading? Initially, there were vague statements (together we are strong), fears (RED will not remain RED) and denials (RED should remain RED), then increasingly concrete announcements about what the technology transfer will look like exactly.

After cinema cameras with Z-Mount had been promised for some time, the announcement of the RED V-RAPTOR-X and KOMODO-X with Z-Mount followed recently. But the Japanese had also made it clear that film technology know-how from RED should be incorporated into Z-cameras. And now there is another interesting rumor about this.

Namely, Nikon is expected to bring out a video-centered Nikon Z model later this year, in which RED technology will also be incorporated. While the camera is basically based on the Z6 III, one can supposedly hope for a housing that has more video proximity; the FX3 is mentioned as an example.

We already had thought experiments in the summer about which RED technology could flow into Nikon cameras first; these are of course becoming more relevant again. The RED Color Science would be our tip, for example; with the RED LUTs for N-Log published in the fall, the path had already been taken there.

As for the camera housing, we see room for improvement in terms of audio - a way to connect XLR adapters wirelessly would be pretty great (or maybe even integrated mini-XLR?).

If the mentioned timeframe is correct, unfortunately there will be nothing to see of this camera at the NAB in early April - we are still curious to see how (and what) the camera duo will present there. Among other things, cine lenses with Z-Mount are still pending.
