With the new Focus 7, SmallHDs has introduced its first 7" on-camera monitor with touch screen. The Focus 7 is the latest model in SmallHD's Focus series, which is primarily aimed at DSLR filmmakers and with its 1,000 nits is bright enough to deliver useful images even in daylight to control the camera images.
It weighs only approx. 300g and has a resolution of 1,920x1,200 pixels. On the IPS display you can display (scaled down) HDMI 4K video with up to 30fps. It gets its power from two Sony L batteries, which can be exchanged during operation without causing a power interruption. The batteries can also supply power to the camera or accessories. The Focus 7 can be mounted using its 1/4"-20 holes and an optional tilt arm attached to the camera's cold shoe.
SmallHD's OS3 user interface provides a number of useful features - allowing filmmakers to view waveforms, scopes, and e.g. false color of their image, and with the help of Focus Assist/Peaking, draw focus and adjust exposure. With the pinch-to-zoom function, users can easily adjust the settings of their shot. Colors can be corrected using 3D LUTs (look-up tables) via SD card.
The Focus 7 has several advantages over its little brother Focus 5: its display is larger than that of the Focus 5 (7" instead of 5") with a higher resolution, and it is also much brighter (1,000 instead of 800 nits). The SmallHD Focus 7 is available from 11 March and costs around 700 dollars.
