Smartphone Gimbal: DJI Osmo Mobile 8 Brings 360° Pans and iPhone DockKit Support

[13:05 Thu,6.November 2025   by Thomas Richter]

DJI has released a new model in its Osmo Mobile smartphone gimbal series, the Osmo Mobile 8, less than nine months after the Osmo Mobile 7 (referencing www.slashcam.de/news/single/DJI-Osmo-Mobile-7-Serie-trackt-Personen-mit-neuem--19115.html). The Osmo Mobile 8 brings several innovations: an unlimited horizontal 360° pan rotation and, for the first time, subject tracking using Apple&s DockKit. Additionally, an optional multifunction module is available—as with the Osmo Mobile 7—for subject tracking independent of the smartphone, wireless audio reception, and lighting via an integrated fill light.

The Osmo Mobile 8 offers three different tracking methods where the gimbal autonomously follows a subject, effectively acting as a robot camera in conjunction with a smartphone. Tracking can be done using Apple&s intelligent subject tracking technology, DockKit, with the advantage that object tracking can occur within the native iPhone camera app or any of the over 200 iOS applications compatible with Apple DockKit. In this, DJI follows the example of competitor Insta360, which was the first gimbal manufacturer to support tracking via Apple&s DockKit with its Insta360 Flow Pro Smartphone Gimbal (over a year ago, referencing www.slashcam.de/news/single/Insta360-Flow-Pro--Smartphone-Gimbal-mit-iPhone-Do-18679.html).

Alternatively, the Osmo Mobile 8 can track subjects using the optional multifunction module and its integrated camera. This module supports both iPhones and Android smartphones and, in the new version, can now track dogs and cats in addition to people. It attaches magnetically to the Osmo and supports tracking within the respective native camera and livestreaming apps.

As a third option, objects can be tracked using the DJI Mimo app for iOS and Android with the help of DJI&s proprietary tracking technology, ActiveTrack 7.0.1, which can follow people, pets, and other active objects. Using Dual Lens Boost, the app utilizes both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses of a smartphone to ensure the subject is never lost, regardless of movement speed or scene clutter. Smart Capture can also recognize multiple subjects and track selected ones upon request. The Mimo app also enables Timelapse/Motionlapse/Hyperlapse, Panorama (3x3, 240°, CloneMe), DynamicZoom, ShotGuides, as well as an AI editor for quick editing workflows.

### The Optional DJI OM Multifunction Module

In addition to subject tracking, the multifunction module offers a fill light with eight brightness levels and eight color temperature levels, which can be adjusted by pressing and holding the side control wheel.

The multifunction module can also act as a microphone receiver by connecting its USB-C port to the smartphone to ensure high-quality audio transmission. Its integrated microphone receiver is compatible with transmitters from the DJI Mic 3, DJI Mic 2, and DJI Mic Mini.

The module attaches easily to the gimbal with a magnetic clip and can be controlled with hand gestures to take photos, start or stop video recording, activate tracking, or adjust composition:
- Showing the palm towards the module starts or stops intelligent tracking.
- A "V" gesture takes a photo. It can also start or stop video recording.
- A "double L" gesture with both hands adjusts the framing of a subject.

### 360° Pan Rotation on the Horizontal Axis

The horizontal axis now allows for continuous, horizontal 360° rotation. Compared to previous Osmo Mobile models that did not offer this freedom, the Osmo Mobile 8 now enables smooth endless pans, panoramas, and creative transitions without axis locking. In combination with tracking, subjects remain in the frame during complete rotations.

The Osmo Mobile 8 is paired directly with the smartphone via simple Bluetooth/NFC tap. For iPhone users, there is also a magnetic quick-release mount that replaces the standard clamp. A tripod and an extension rod are integrated. The extender expands the field of view (selfies, group shots, overhead shots); the tripod supports solo setups.
The battery life is up to 10 hours, the same as the Osmo Mobile 7. The gimbal can charge the smartphone via USB-C—practical for longer recordings or livestreams.

### Price and Availability

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8 is available immediately for 159 Euros. Bundled with a DJI Mic Mini transmitter, it costs 192 Euros. The OM 8 Tracking set with the multifunction module and mount costs 49 Euros.
