Sonnet: Modular DuoModo Thunderbolt expansion systems for desktop and rack mounting

Sonnet&s new DuoModo series consists of three modules to expand computers like the Apple Mac Mini via Thunderbolt with additional PCIe card slots, external graphics cards or storage options. Sonnet also offers three matching (desktop/rackmount) enclosures for integrating individual modules with the Mac Mini. Alternatively, Sonnet also offers four pre-configured systems with the most common combinations of modules and enclosures. All modules are compatible with both Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4.

The DuoModo modules allow computers without card slots, such as the Mac Mini, to still use PCIe cards via Thunderbolt - the DuoModo enclosures allow Mac mini computers to be installed in professional racks. The DuoModo line was designed by Sonnet specifically for audio, video and broadcast applications. Users can configure a system to meet their specific needs such as a Mac mini-based system with two graphics cards or with six PCIe cards, or a solution with a Mac mini plus one graphics card or three PCIe cards. Additional modules are planned.

The DuoMode modules

DuoModo xMac mini module.

This module is designed to be used to mount an Intel or M1 Mac mini computer in a desktop or rackmount chassis. The ports on the back remain freely accessible. The module&s integrated Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) storage dock provides users with four ports on the front, consisting of three 10Gbps USB ports (two Type-C ports and one Type-A port, each of which can power bus-powered devices) and one Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) port.

DuoModo xMac Mini Module.

An internal USB Type-A port is provided for connecting a software license dongle such as an iLok USB-A or thumb drive. The dock also has two M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD slots, allowing users to add up to 16TB of fast storage to their system.

DuoModo Echo III Module.

This module is the same one already used in Sonnet&s 2020 Echo III desktop and Echo III rackmount models. It has one x16 slot and two x8 PCIe 3.0 slots and accepts full-height and full-length PCIe cards (up to 12.28 inches). A 0.7-meter Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable is included for connection to the computer&s Thunderbolt port. The module includes a universal 400W power supply and a 75W auxiliary power connector for cards (not graphics cards) that require additional power. The module includes a mode switch that allows the use of three Avid Pro Tools|HDX PCIe cards, as well as Noctua fans for extra quiet operation.

DuoModo eGPU Module.

The module supports full-length and full-height graphics cards, suitable for 2.5-inch slots. It features two temperature-controlled, variable-speed Noctua fans that cool the installed card efficiently and extremely quietly. Sonnet has equipped this expansion module with an 800-watt power supply that also supports power-hungry graphics cards.

DuoModo desktop and rackmount enclosures for two modules.

The desktop enclosure, which can accommodate any two DuoModo modules, measures 6.9 inches wide by 16.7 inches deep and 9.1 inches high. The 2U rackmount enclosure for two modules is the same one used in the Echo III rackmount system. It measures 19 inches wide, 16.5 inches deep, and 3.5 inches high.

This enclosure is identical to the one used in the Echo III desktop system. It measures 3.5 inches wide x 16.7 inches deep x 9 inches high and accommodates any DuoModo module.

DuoModo Preconfigured Systems.

In addition to the individual modules, four pre-configured systems are available. Each contains one xMac mini module. Either an Echo III module or an eGPU module is added to this, as well as a desktop or rackmount enclosure for two modules.
