Sonnet has released two new USB/Thunderbolt adapters, each with two DisplayPort and two HDMI ports respectively, for Apple&s M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max Macs. These allow two external monitors to be connected via their HDMI or DisplayPort, each at resolutions up to 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) at up to 60 frames per second.
![]() Sonnet DisplayLink Dual DisplayPort/HDMI Adapter As an alternative to the Thunderbolt 3/4 port, the Sonnet adapter can also be connected via a USB Type-A port to avoid unnecessarily occupying a Thunderbolt port. This is possible because although the adapter is originally equipped with a USB Type-A port, it comes with its own adapter from USB Type-A to USB-C (i.e. also the port that Thunderbolt uses). For example, the adapter can be used to connect up to three displays to an M1 Mac mini, which only has an HDMI 2.0 output, and - using two Sonnet adapters - even up to four 4K displays to M1 or Intel Macs. Especially for working with video, a large desktop area across multiple monitors is very helpful. Of course, not only 4K monitors are supported, but also displays (or even TVs) with a lower resolution - the audio is also transmitted. ![]() Connected via Thunderbolt or USB-A. While Sonnet specifically names M1 Mac owners as the target audience for the two new adapters, they work just as well with older Intel-based Mac or Windows computers with USB-3 or USB-C interfaces. The adapter is compatible with both all Macs running macOS 10.15+ and all PCs running Windows 11 or 10 - though Sonnet especially recommends the adapters for computers with Thunderbolt 4 or 3 interfaces.
