Sony A9 Firmware 5.00 brings real-time Focus Tracking and Proxy Recording

Sony has released the new firmware 5.00 for the 24MP full-frame sensor camera Sony Alpha 9, already announced in January, which brings several interesting new features.

With the new improved real-time tracking , the focus can be fixed on a selected moving object, which is then tracked exactly. Object recognition includes colors, distance, patterns such as brightness and spatial information in the motion prediction. As a result, once an object has been captured, it should be able to "stick" to the focus. Objects to be tracked can also be selected directly via Touch Tracking on the monitor. The real-time autofocus especially for the eyes is also new.

The new Touchpad function for the focus offers further possibilities for the focus shift - with its help the monitor can be used during the recording like a touchpad, in order to shift the focus by finger movement, while one looks by the viewfinder. Alternatively, the focus can be moved to where the finger touches the image. The Fast Hybrid AF is intended to make the autofocus more reliable and smoother, especially in video mode.

Interesting I also the new possibility with the recording of 4K video at the same time a Low-Definition-Proxy-Film to record. Thus, when editing 4K movies, the load on the PC can be reduced by using the small proxy movies for editing and previewing.

The extended phase AF to aperture 11 to aperture 16 is an improvement because it now works over even more f-stops than before. In addition to autofocus, the 5.0 update also focuses on image quality - color reproduction has been improved. This should make the transitions and the brightness distribution much softer and more natural, e.g. when shooting the sky. In addition, the algorithm for automatic white balance has been further developed to guarantee balanced images for continuous shooting.

Other new functions include camera operation and file management, such as "My Dial" and "Dual Slot Media" Menu Enhancements as well as the ability to evaluate and protect images in the camera. The new firmware is compatible with the new "Imaging Edge Mobile" app - the successor of "PlayMemories Mobile".

The new app offers some new features like "Transfer & Tagging add-on, which make workflows even easier. This includes, for example, the automatic wireless transfer of images and videos including metadata from the camera via an FTP server to the smartphone.
