What&s New in Sony Burano Firmware 2.0

The firmware update 2.0, which was actually promised for March, has finally been released for download: 697 MB. It brings new recording formats, such as a 3.8K full-frame crop mode that utilizes nearly the entire sensor and allows recording at up to 120 fps, as well as a 1.9K mode with up to 240 fps. Other new formats include 24.00 fps in the X-OCN 16:9 image scan modes and the following:

Full Frame 3.8K 16:9 Mode Up to 120 fps XAVC and X-OCN
Super 35 4.3K 4:3 Mode (for Anamorphic) Up to 60 fps X-OCN only
Super 35 1.9K 16:9 Mode Up to 240 fps* XAVC only

*SDI and HDMI output not available at 240 fps

Firmware 2.0 also introduces a 1.8x de-squeeze setting and additional high frame rate (S&Q) options, including 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96, and 110 fps. It adds proxy recording for formats with 24.00 fps as well.

Improvements in Monitoring, SDI, and Metadata

The new firmware also brings various improvements to Burano’s monitoring and metadata features, including a standardized SDI video output (“Monitor FHD”) for monitoring X-OCN and XAVC. It adds metadata for breathing compensation and image stabilization in X-OCN, as well as timecode and clip name metadata, and 23.98 PsF support for SDI output.

Other improvements include an enhanced screen display that moves camera status information outside the image and adds a viewfinder gamma display assist when using S-Log3 for monitoring. The PL mount voltage menu now includes a 24V output, and compatibility with focus/iris/zoom control for PL mount lenses is added when using the optional BURANO handgrip GP-VR100. The new default base look is now “709tone”.

Improved Image Output and Additional Exposure Tools

Image output has been improved, including when using the preset S-Log3 look or custom 3D user LUTs. Firmware 2.0 also enhances autofocus performance when recording at frame rates of 23.98, 24, 25, and 29.97. New exposure tools (High/Low Key) have been added, derived from the flagship VENICE camera system. White balance presets have been expanded from 3 to 8, and active/high image stabilization is now supported in the Full Frame Crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 modes.

User-friendliness has been expanded with the ability to format media directly from the status screen and to set CAM ID and reel number, which is standard for documentary and reality TV applications. The factory default frame rate setting has been changed from 59.94 to 23.98p, and a new option has been added to reset the system to factory defaults. Also new is live event and multicam functionality, including variable ND control from RCPs, enhanced camera control via Camera Remote SDK, and tally control for LAN-connected devices.
