Curtain up for Burano - the already teased new addition to the CineAlta range has just been unveiled. The high-end CinemaLine camera with PL-/E-Mount ranks below the Venice 2 and is aimed at smaller film crews and solo shooters. It combines more compact dimensions and a full-frame sensor matched to the Venice 2 with autofocus, sensor stabilization and an electronic Vario-ND - a combination that is new in this segment.
The Burano&s 8.6K full-frame sensor is said to share many similarities with that of the Venice 2, allowing footage from both cameras to be seamlessly mixed in one production. Sony claims a DualBase ISO of 800 and 3200 for the sensor, as well as a 16 stop dynamic range. The camera has the same color management as all Cinema Line relatives, including Venice 2.
In addition to shooting in full-frame, the Burano naturally supports filming in a Super35 window, and anamorphic filming is also possible (although it&s unclear whether right from the start or only with a later update). In 8K, 30 fps is the maximum, in 6K there are 60fps, 4K 120 fps. Among the internal recording formats, you&ll find the new XAVC H for 8K (based on an MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 compression), as well as XAVC or X-OCN LT.
LOG formats include S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut.Cine, and four new cine looks are on board (Warm, Cool, Vintage, Teal and Orange). s709 and 709 (800%) Look Up Tables (LUTs) are supported.
The Sony Burano is the first PL mount camera to offer sensor stabilization. At the same time, the Burano can also be used with E-mount lenses thanks to an interchangeable mount - in this mode, a fast hybrid autofocus with scene recognition is then available, as is optical image stabilization (with compatible lenses). The electronic variable ND filter (0.6 to 2.1) is said to be thinner than before.
Overall, the Genlock-enabled camera is about 32mm shorter and 1.4 kg lighter than the Venice 2. The housing is made of a robust magnesium alloy. Sony has taken user feedback on board and positioned all the control buttons on the left side here. Tally lamps indicate shooting status on three sides. The 3.5" LC display can be used as a viewfinder, for touch focus or for menu navigation. Other features include a T-handle, a viewfinder arm, two 3-pin XLR audio inputs and a stereo mini-jack for headphones. There are two CF express Type B card slots; VPG400 is supported for writing away high data rates (including X-OCN LT 8K). Compatible cards will be released by Sony next year (CEB-G1920T with 1920 GB, CEB-G960T with 960 GB).
The CineAlta Sony Burano will be released in spring 2024 and will cost about 25,000 euros plus VAT.
