Sony introduces the widest-angle fixed focal length of the G Master series so far with the FE 14 millimeter F1.8 GM. The E-mount lens with a maximum aperture of F1.8 has a compact design and measures just 83 x 99.8 millimeters, weighing 460 grams.
The optical design of the ultra-wide-angle lens comprises 14 elements in 11 groups, including two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and one Super ED glass element. Sony's original AR Nano Coating II is said to reduce flare and ghosting effects when shooting under difficult lighting conditions.
The aperture is circular and consists of nine blades. Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors are said to precisely lock and maintain focus even when shooting with shallow depth of field at F1.8. Autofocus is said to operate quietly with minimal vibration.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.25 meters. The lens offers a linear-response manual focus adjustment for direct, precise focusing, as is typical of the series. An aperture ring is also provided, as are various control options such as a focus hold button, focus selector switch and focus ring. Additional adjustments can be made to assign more functions to the focus hold button via the menu on the camera body.
A rear filter holder accepts standard ND, color correction and blur filters. Thanks to a fluorine coating on the front as well as rear lens elements, the G Master lens is reasonably weather resistant and also protected against contamination when changing filters. A built-in lens hood prevents extraneous light from entering, which could cause flare and ghosting effects. Sony's FE 14 millimeter F1.8 GM (SEL-14F18GM) is scheduled to be available in May and will cost 1,599 Euros.
