With the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards, Sony launched an exciting competition last year that will once again focus on various short film topics in categories ranging from "Fiction" to "Environment" and "Future Format". Filmmakers can submit their short films until 15 February 2024, 14:00 (CET). A new competition format will be introduced at the 2024 Awards. It comprises six categories in which filmmakers can apply: ![]()
- In the Fiction category, entries are sought that tell a fictional story or depict a fictional event in an original way. Entries must be 5 to 20 minutes long. - In the Non-Fiction category, films between 5 and 20 minutes long that are predominantly fact-based may be submitted. - In the Environment category, entries of 5 to 20 minutes are invited on the topic of the environment. This category is part of Creators for the Planet, a year-round global engagement programme launched by Creo and developed in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures. - New to this year&s competition is the Animation category, for which animated films between 2 and 20 minutes in length can be submitted. - The Student category will recognise filmmakers enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate film programme at a registered institution in any part of the world. Shortlisted institutions will be selected by continent to ensure that a broad range of talent from around the world is represented. Entries must be between 5 and 20 minutes long and can be of any genre. - In the Future Format category, only films shot exclusively with a smartphone can be submitted. Entries must be between 2 and 5 minutes long and can be from any genre If you want to get an impression of the winning films in 2023, you can find ![]() The four-day workshop programme will take place at the Sony Pictures studio lot in Culver City, California, from 28 to 31 May 2024. The jury for the 2024 competition will be announced in October 2023. All shortlisted candidates will be flown to Los Angeles to participate in the four-day workshop programme and awards gala. This year, shortlisted filmmakers can also invite the cinematographer who officially worked on their film to the awards ceremony and workshop programme. Winners in the Fiction, Non-Fiction, Environment and Animation categories will receive a Cinema Line FX9 camera, an FE C 16-35mm lens and ,000 in prize money. The winner in the Student category and his/her institution will each receive a Cinema Line FX6 camera and a FE 24-105 mm lens. The winner of the Future Format category will receive Sony digital photography products and ,500 in prize money.
