Sony has just announced a new full format camera at IBC. It&s no coincidence that the PXW-FX9 is an unofficial FS7 successor with a 36mm wide sensor. Compared to the well-known model, however, a lot has changed: The new 6K sensor internally scales down to 4K at full readout and is supposed to achieve more than 15 f-stops dynamics through oversampling. There will be no native 6K recording. Also not via external RAW, which can be tapped as a 16 bit signal.

In cropped modes 4K with up to 60 fps are possible and in HD/2K up to 120 fps are "in". Future updates will allow 180 fps in HD and up to 120 fps externally in 4K.
The sensor has two BASE ISOs (800 and 4000), which gives hope for a good LowLight behavior. Borrowed from the FS5 and now for the first time also available in Fulframe, there is an electronic variable ND filter (EVND).
The autofocus - with contrast and phase detection hybrid - is also to work at the contemporary SLR level. It can recognize faces and even save them for later tracking. Of course, this requires a mount that supports autofocus, which is why Sony&s E-Mount is of course also used here. This is however equipped with a professional Lever Lock lock, which one knows from the professional area of the PL Mount.

The PXW-FX9 will inherit a cinematic color science from Venice, which will be available via a new Cinetone profile. We already had the opportunity to make a hands-on appointment with a pre-series model at Sony in advance, which you can read here.
