The newly introduced Xperia 5 II smartphone brings many of the camera features of the slightly larger Xperia 1 II -- the same triple camera with Zeiss lenses and (Kb equivalent) 16mm super wide angle, 24mm wide angle and 70mm tele, each with 12 megapixel resolution. The sensor of the 24mm camera is the largest at 1/1.7". Compared to the Xperia 1 II, a time-of-flight module for depth measurement is missing, but the camera is supposed to offer 4K HDR slow-motion video recording with 120 frames per second, according to Sony for the first time in a smartphone.
This option is included for the 24mm camera as part of the Cinema Pro mode, which comes with some more professional controls -- "powered by CineAlta". Videos in 21:9 cinema format with 24 / 25 / 30 / 60 BpS are also possible in 4K HDR. In addition, there are various filters in the style of the professional Venice camera from Sony as well as settings for shutter speed, ISO values, white balance and the choice of lenses or modules. The Cinema Pro user interface should also be usable as a mobile editing suite for videos.
The autofocus comes from the Alpha Series and works continuously in photo mode with 60 bpS real-time tracking (and real-time eye autofocus for humans and animals). As processor the Bionz X for Mobile is on board. In terms of image stabilization, there are different options: OIS video is available for Cinematography Pro when shooting with the 24 mm and 70 mm camera, EIS video is available for Cinematography Pro when shooting with the 16 mm camera. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization (hybrid OIS/EIS video stabilization) is available for the normal camera app when shooting with the 24 mm and 70 mm camera, SteadyShot with Intelligent Active Mode (five-axis stabilization) is available in the camera app for the 16 mm camera.
With the 6.1" (15.5 cm) FHD+ HDR OLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, 240 Hz motion blur reduction and 240 Hz touch-scan frequency, Sony also places a clear focus on gaming quality in the Xperia 5 II. The further equipment covers the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with 5G mobile platform as well as its 5G modem Qualcomm X55, 8 GB RAM as well as 128 GB internal memory, which is expandable via microSD card slot, as well as a 4,000 mAh battery. The device is certified to IP65/68 against water and dust ingress.
The Sony Xperia 5 II will be available with Android 10 for 899 Euro (RRP) from the fourth quarter of 2020.
