Sony presented its new Sony Alpha a7R III full format at an event in China. Although the 42.4 MP sensor is the same as in its predecessor a7R II, the new a7R III has once again increased its speed. This is due to the combination of the new LSI Front End Processor and the faster processing Bionz X main processor. This means that for photographers, the maximum number of images is now max. 10 fps in maximum resolution possible (previously 5 fps). The most important new additions to the layout/housing of the Sony Alpha a7R III are likely to be the integrated Dual SD card slot, the new rear touch screen, a navigation joystick and an AF-On button.
The 5-axis sensor stabilization is on board as with the predecessor - but the performance is supposed to have been improved again.
In addition to the dual card slot (support for UHS-II), the most important innovations for video users are likely to be the SLOG3 and Hybrid Log Gamma functions, which are now also available for the Sony Alpha 7R III. The increased battery life should also be important for video users. Sony now uses the same battery for the a7R III as for the Sony a9 (Sony NP-FZ100).
There is no indication of a codec update in the data available so far. 10 bit or intraframe seems to be no problem for the a7R III - it remains to be seen whether Sony will cancel this for the a7S III. The options for reading out the a7R III sensor in video mode have also remained the same. For 4K, either the width of the sensor or a 5K downsampling is available. At our test of the Sony a7R II the S35 readout (5K oversampling) was the qualitatively much better option.
Another new addition to the Sony a7R III is a USB-C port, which can also be used to power the camera externally. The previous MicroUSB port will continue to be used for accessory connections.
A number of sample video clips for the new Sony a7R III are also already online:
The price for the Sony a7R III is (at least in the dollar range) the same as that for the launch of its predecessor:
,199.99. The Sony a7RIII is scheduled to be available from the end of November.
