Sony has redesigned its G Master telephoto zoom lens FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II for E-mount (full frame), reducing its weight by about a third - the optic now weighs just 1,045g. Autofocus performance has also been improved, with Sony talking about an increase in speed of up to 4 times - four original XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors are used. ![]() Sony G Master FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Speed is F2.8 throughout, and a new aperture unit is said to provide natural, circular bokeh (with 11 blades) as well as quiet operation. Focus breathing as well as focus and axis shifts when zooming are said to be reduced. The autofocus is also said to be able to reliably hit and track moving objects during video recording.
The lens offers independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris, the latter can be optionally unclicked. Manual focus is linear response for responsive control with Direct Manual Focus. The closest focusing distance is 40cm (70mm) or 82cm (200mm). The focus range can be limited, focus hold buttons and an aperture lock are also provided, as well as optical image stabilization. The optical construction consists of 17 elements in 14 groups, including two aspherical elements as well as an XA element (extremely aspherical), which are supposed to provide high resolution, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements and an aspherical ED element minimize chromatic aberration. An AR Nano Coating II reduces reflections and ghosting effects. The lens is said to be balanced so that the center of gravity is directly over the tripod mount. ![]() FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II with Sony Alpha The front lens element has a fluorine coating, and in addition, dust and splash protection has been significantly improved over the previous model, according to Sony.
