Start Still in December?: DJI Avata 360 - FPV and 360° Drone via Dual Mode

Thanks to new leaks, there is now further interesting information about the next generation of DJI&s Avata FPV drone. Surprisingly, instead of an Avata 3, DJI is developing a model with 360° all-round vision, which will be a direct competitor to Insta360&s Antigravity A1. New images of the Avata 360 show that the new model is still a direct successor to the Avata 2, which also allows for "normal" FPV flights without a panoramic view essentially also an Avata 3. DJI seems to use the gimbal to rotate the camera module with the two upward and downward-facing camera modules by 90°, so that one of the cameras points forward and thus delivers images like a normal FPV drone.

This dual function, i.e., a 360° and a "normal" FPV mode, would be a clear advantage over the direct competitor, Insta360&s Antigravity. DJI thus combines its drone technology with the 8K 360° recording technology of the Osmo 360, so that the Avata 360 records comprehensive 360° video using its two 1.1" image sensors and transmits it live to an FPV Goggle, allowing the pilot to look around freely in all directions during flight.

This free view in all directions, including up and down, is achieved by a fisheye camera pointing upwards and one pointing downwards, whose images are stitched together into a seamless and undistorted image. The Avata 360 is then intuitively controlled via the Motion Controller, as can be clearly seen in the leaked images. The 360° cameras are supplemented by several sensors in the direction of flight and to the sides for automatic obstacle avoidance, including a frontal LiDAR as already seen in the Neo 2 and Mini 5 Pro. For video transmission/control via DJI Goggles 3 and the RC Motion 3 controller for distances up to 20 km (FCC), the Avata 360 reportedly uses OcuSync.

To give a vague impression of the new freedom provided by the 360° all-round vision, which completely detaches the view and camera control from the direction of flight, here is the demo video of the Antigravity A1.
However, this freedom is not limited to the actual flight but also affects post-production: since an 8K 360° video is recorded during the flight (at 50 fps), a video with any desired frame can be exported later. The FPV video is said to be recorded at 4K/120 fps.

Launch in December? The indications of an imminent launch date are also becoming clearer: there is already an FCC registration the prerequisite for a market launch in the USA. Based on experience, such a registration indicates an imminent market launch within the next few weeks (Air 3 and Mini 4 Pro) to 5 months (Mavic 4 Pro). However, there is one argument that suggests a rather early release: since DJI faces an automatic ban for new products in the USA after December 23rd, a launch before this date would have the advantage that DJI would have launched the Avata 360 just in time before the ban in the large American market and could sell it there. And it would preempt the Antigravity A1, which is not scheduled to be released until January 2026.

Price - as expensive as the Antigravity A1? Since DJI is competing directly with the also soon-to-be-launched 360° drone Antigravity A1 with the Avata 360, rumors suggest its price will be at a similar level, amounting to it would be significantly more attractive than the competitor given the added value of dual use as an FPV drone. Compared to the previous model, this would be a surcharge of around for the 360° capability and possibly other upgrades, such as LiDAR and a larger sensor (1/1.1" instead of 1/1.3").
