Canon has introduced the professional RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM super-telephoto zoom lens, which is said to be the lightest zoom lens in its class, weighing about 2.59 kg.
It has been redesigned as an evolution of the EF 300mm f/2.8; image quality is said to be on par with the fixed focal length.

Supertele zoom lens RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM
The high speed of 1:2.8 is maintained throughout the zoom range, and the closest focusing distance of 1.8m is also constant. Unusual for a super telephoto lens, the pressed aspherical lens, as well as UD and fluorite lenses, provide high detail and reduce chromatic aberration, ghosting and flare, according to Canon. The aperture consists of 9 blades.
The RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM is Canon's first super-telephoto lens with two Nano-USM motors for fast focusing and the highest image quality throughout the zoom range, as two lens groups are controlled independently. The image stabilizer mechanism is based on the IS systems of Canon's L-series super telephoto lenses. The lens itself offers an optical image stabilizer (up to 5.5 exposure stops), whose performance increases to six stops when combined with an in-camera image stabilizer (IBIS). The system is said to detect when shooting from a tripod and then automatically disable the IS.
The lens is compatible with all RF extenders throughout the zoom range. The RF 1.4x extender increases the lens' range to 140-420mm F4, while the RF 2x extender extends the lens to 200-600mm F5.6. This makes the RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM suitable for sports, news and wildlife photography, as well as whenever it is not possible to switch between different lenses during a shoot.
As the first professional RF super telephoto lens, the optic features a lens control ring and a new configurable L.FN button, allowing for better manual control. Thanks to dust and splash water protection, the lens can be used even in adverse
weather conditions. A fluorine coating allows easy cleaning of the front lens. The RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM's heat-protective coating is the same as on the EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS III USM and EF 600mm f/4 L IS III USM. This is now standard on all RF super telephoto lenses and reduces the temperature of the lens when shooting in hot environments.
