The End of an Era: Is Apple Finally Saying Goodbye to the Mac Pro in Favor of the Mac Studio?

[11:57 Fri,21.November 2025   by Thomas Richter]

What was striking in the Apple Mac Roadmap 2026/2027 just leaked by Mark Gurman (www.slashcam.de/news/single/Apple-plant-OLED-MacBook-Pro--Mac-Studio-M6-Ultra--19647.html) was the absence of a classic, whose relaunch has long been anticipated: the Mac Pro (aka cheese grater). According to the new Gurman rumor, Apple had actually planned a new model of the Mac Pro with M4 Ultra for 2026, but this has now been quietly shelved. It would have been time for a product update, as the last (www.slashcam.de/artikel/Aktuelles/Neuer-M2-Ultra-in-Mac-Studio-und-Mac-Pro-mit-PCIe---doch-wofuer---alles-.html) Mac Pro was released back in 2023, at that time still with the M2 Ultra. According to Gurman, Apple no longer has any plans to update the Mac Pro, which is thus practically dead.

Mac Studio instead of Mac Pro

At the center of planning for the next generation of high-end Macs is the Mac Studio, which is set to appear in 2026 in a version with M5 Max and the M5 Ultra. It thus takes over the role of the Mac Pro as Apple&s top model. Since the first introduction of the (www.slashcam.de/news/single/Extreme-Leistung--Apple-stellt-Mac-Studio-mit-neue-17087.html) Mac Studio three years ago, Apple has already released two further generations. The current top model is the Mac Studio with M3 Ultra and 512 GB Unified Memory, which performed excellently in our review (Apple Mac Studio with M3 Ultra in 4K-12K Performance Test with ARRI, Sony, Canon, Blackmagic ...) and took first place in our (DaVinci Resolve 8K Benchmark).

The Ultra Entry-Level Models Compared

The current Apple Mac Studio with M3 Ultra (28-core CPU, 60-core GPU, and 32 Neural Engine cores), 96 GB costs 4,799 Euros - the Mac Pro with M2 Ultra (24-CPU cores, 60-core GPU, and 32 Neural Engine cores) and 64 GB of memory, on the other hand, seems heavily overpriced at 8,299 Euros - in a direct comparison, the Mac Studio is the clear price-performance winner. Furthermore, the Mac Studio can be configured with significantly more mass storage (16 TB instead of 8 TB) and Unified Memory (512 GB instead of 192 GB) for maximum performance.

PCIe Expansion Slots - What For?

The only advantage of the large Mac Pro is its PCIe expansion slots, which, however, do not support additional graphics cards because the GPU in Apple Silicon is firmly integrated with the CPU and shared memory. But the computing power from additional graphics cards was previously a main reason for professionals to use large workstations with (many) PCIe slots. Otherwise, the PCIe slots are practically only useful for I/O cards such as SDI capture, 25/100 GbE, RAID systems, or Audio DSP. However, this advantage is increasingly nullified by connecting external hardware via the extremely fast (up to 80 Gb/s or 10 GB/s - unidirectional up to 120 Gb/s for display connection with "Bandwidth Boost") Thunderbolt 5 of the current Mac Studio. Thunderbolt 5 can also be used to dynamically connect external extremely fast NVMe SSD drives or RAID systems, eliminating the need for space inside the case for them.

Apple Mac Pro - lots of space, but what for?

Apple&s move makes sense in this context, as the Mac Studio currently offers more computing power per budget, modern I/O options via Thunderbolt 5, and higher memory limits compared to the Mac Pro. And since the reasons for the Mac Pro&s large size have now almost completely disappeared, and internal RAM or GPU upgrades are no longer possible due to system design (unlike the old Intel Mac Pros), the Mac Pro is increasingly becoming a legacy niche solution for users who absolutely still need internal PCIe cards - a target group that is not large enough to justify continuing the development of the now unnecessarily large Mac Pro.
