The Summer Olympics (from July 2024 in Paris) are traditionally an event that established camera manufacturers like to use to showcase (or at least test) their flagship cameras in practice. In the case of Sony and Canon, the new flagship models Sony A9 III and Canon EOS R1 are eagerly awaited. Sony now seems to be one step closer to unveiling its new flagship model (a new 5.1GHz WIFI model has been registered in China with the code WW559681).
The rumour mill seems certain that this is supposed to be the new Sony A9 III, which is expected to be unveiled at the end of this year, or early next year, and thus should be in the hands of press photographers in time for the Olympics.
In the case of Canon&s camera nomenclature, the smaller counter stands for the higher-quality model. The last Canon camera with a "1" in the model name was the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, introduced in January 2020, which was still a classic SLR camera. The 1 position for Canon&s mirrorless EOS R system is currently still vacant - even though Canon&s current flagship model, the Canon EOS R3, should still leave little to be desired, especially for sports photographers (see also the slashCAM
practical test and
lab test of the Canon EOS R3.
It is also possible that Canon will wait for the presentation of Sony&s new DSLM flagship model, the A9III, to make it easier to position the R1.
Although we expect both cameras to have a main focus on professional photography - there should also be plenty of exciting new flagship technologies for filmmakers.
In any case, we&re already pretty excited and we&ll ask around what features you&d most like to see here ... internal ND filter? Global shutter? ...?
