The Top 20 (longlist) for the Visual Effects Oscars are out and contain one or two surprises. For example, the completely animated Sony Pictures production "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is (in our opinion very rightly) included here, which is rather unusual for an animated film. ;)
The nominations for "Napoleon" and "The Creator", on the other hand, should come as little surprise. Although they both integrate completely different types of VFX work, they can both be considered VFX-heavy films. In this context, see also our news on  Ridley Scott&s Napoleon: The cinematography by DOP Dariusz Wolski and IMAX blockbuster The Creator shot with a 5,000 euro camera - Sony&s FX3. ;) We were less surprised by the films on the longlist than by one missing name: Christopher Nolan&s "Oppenheimer". Admittedly, the visual effects list for Oppenheimer may be shorter than that for Napoleon or The Creator - but when it comes to special effects, it should be able to keep up. But perhaps the Oscars deliberately differentiate between special and visual effects. If this is the case, however, we believe that there is no chance of recognizing those filmmakers who prefer to create their effects on set rather than in post-production.
