Twice as bright and expensive: Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 - ultra-wide 49

[13:01 Thu,29.July 2021   by Thomas Richter]

Samsung has unveiled the successor to its popular ultra-wide 49" gaming monitor Odyssey G9 (G95T). The technical specifications of the new Odyssey Neo G9 (G95NA) had already been leaked in May and have been confirmed: so the "new" G9 does not differ externally from its predecessor, but the technology has undergone a major upgrade.

Thus, the Neo G9 now uses a Quantum Matrix mini-LED display with 2,048 illumination zones, which not only enables a much better peak brightness (2,000 nits instead of 1,000 before), but also a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 due to the possibilities of local dimming.

The dual QHD resolution of 31:9 5K of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels has remained the same - those who don&t mind the low vertical resolution of 1,440 Hz compared to real 4K will get a large desktop area for working with video, for example. The maximum refresh rate of 240 Hz, the GTG response time of 1 millisecond, and the strong curvature of 1000R have also remained the same. The sRGB color space is covered by 125%, the professional DCI-P3 by 95% - the display of HDR is supported via HDR 10 Plus.

The refresh rate can be displayed dynamically - the two DisplayPorts 1.4 support Adaptive Sync, the HDMI2.1 ports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and the Neo G9 is also compatible with both NVIDIA&s G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.

The Odyssey Neo G9 offers two HDMI 2.1 as well as two DisplayPorts 1.4 and two USB 3.0 interfaces. HDMI 2.1 can display 5K at 240 Hz without compression due to the high bandwidth, while DisplayPort 1.4 uses the Display Stream Compression (DSC) method.

No DisplayHDR 2000

.

As already suspected, the www.slashcam.de/news/single/Neuer-Samsung-Odyssey-G9-49--5K-Monitor-bringt-Min-16519.html 8DisplayHDR 2000 certification announced in the leak on the Chinese trading platform Taobao did not come true, which had even led the VESA to announce in an official statement that no DisplayHDR 2000 standard (DisplayHDR 1400 is currently the highest) exists and therefore no monitor certified with it. Since the Neo G9 does not have any DisplayHDR certification now, even though it technically could easily, we can only assume that there was trouble behind the scenes between VESA and Samsung.

Double the brightness - double the price

.
Unfortunately, the improved technology of the Samsung Neo G9 is also reflected in a much higher price - so the new monitor is available for pre-order from July 29 at a price of 2,540 euros - the predecessor G9 is currently already available for around 1,200 euros.
