USA: Actors& strike ends with first-ever protection against digital replication of actors by AI

In July, we reported here on slashCAM about the US actors& strike for better working conditions and protection from AI replicas. Last Wednesday, the actors& union SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) reached a preliminary agreement with the Hollywood studios, the first interesting details of which have now been published.

The new contract now provides for 1 billion dollars in new salaries and benefits as well as a share for actors in successful streaming shows. The minimum remuneration point is also likely to be important, which includes inflation compensation for actors and actresses who are not in the front row (including an immediate 11% increase for extras).

However, the most spectacular point of the new agreement is likely to be the first-ever established consent and compensation guidelines for artificial intelligence. Accordingly, the studios undertake to obtain informed consent for the creation of any type of digital replica of an actor or background actor, including a description of the intended use. The remuneration for the respective digital replica should vary.

Together with an increase in the upper limits for the union&s pension and health insurance contributions and the funds as well as new requirements for intimacy coordinators for nude and sex scenes, the strike can be considered quite a success.

For the first time, screenwriters and actors went on strike together, bringing film and series production (not only) in the USA to a virtual standstill.

It will be interesting to see in the coming months just how much impact the SAG-AFTRA agreement has on other parts of the film world ...
