The firmware update for Panasonic Lumix DC-S1 users, available from July, brings some interesting features - especially for filmmakers. The most important innovation is probably the support for 10 Bit V-Log, which should bring 14+ f-stops dynamics.
This is not the shortened V-Log of the GH series, but the same gamma profile as the professional VariCams from Panasonic, so that the S1 can deliver the same look as VariCam models in the same V-Gamut color space.
Other new features include an internal LUT for V-Log playback during or after recording (LUT display with custom function) and a waveform monitor for displaying the brightness distribution of the image.
The upgrade also enables internal recording of 4:2:2:2 10-bit 4K/30p, external recording via HDMI of 4:2:2 10-bit 4K/60p and 48 kHz/24-bit or 96 kHz/24-bit audio using the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 adapter.
The 10 Bit V-Log Update (DMW-SFU2) costs 199Euro - but is free for existing Panasonic S1 customers from July to September.
