If you still have old videos in your archive, but are annoyed by the low resolution, you now have an interesting new possibility not only to upscale them to more current resolutions, but also to actually sharpen the images afterwards via AI (or a neural network) and thus to extrapolate old SD (720x576) clips to HD (1.920x1.080) or HD movies to 4K (3.840x2.160). The method has just been beautifully demonstrated on the 125 year old short film
The company Topazlabs, known for its software for upscaling photos via AI, is making the Topaz Gigapixel AI for Video available free of charge under Windows in the beta phase. With the help of this software, the resolution of a video can be increased by up to 400%. The program has been online for several months, but has now reached the final stage of development. Here are some examples of videos scaled up with it: However, please note that current version of the AI is trained to input high quality video and therefore works best when the source video is of high quality, especially if the maximum magnification of 400% is to be used. If the video quality is not that good, the developers recommend using only 100-200% magnification to get an acceptable result. However, a new version is still being worked on, which will be able to deal with poor quality input. The program currently only runs under Windows 10, the only requirement is a powerful computer - the recommendation is 32 GB RAM plus an NVIDIA GPU (from GTX 1050) with at least 4-6 GB RAM - less works too, but is then slow. So an Intel iGPU works about 5x and scaling only per CPU about 10x slower. However, support for AMD graphics cards will only be available in the distant future. Several GPUs can only be used for different scaling in parallel, but unfortunately not for a single one. We tested mainly with an Nvidia GTX 1080 - thus scaling from SD to HD takes about 0.5s per frame, HD after 8K between 4-5 seconds per frame. With better GPUs the whole thing accelerates accordingly. ![]() Video enhance AI GUI If you want more options when upscaling, you should use the program in command-line mode - there are a lot of ![]() Since a few hours the 1.5 GB release version for Windows - now renamed "Video enhance AI" - is also available at ![]() In 2-3 weeks a version for Mac will follow and in the future also a frame interpolation a la ![]() ![]() Topazlabs also offers a paid ![]() ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Video enhance AI Tool: Videos selbst hochinterpolieren - aus SD wird HD, aus HD wird 4K |
