Western Digital ArmorLock: Mobile secure SSD with smartphone decryption

Western Digital ArmorLock: Mobile secure SSD with smartphone decryption

[10:04 sat,5.September 2020   by ]

Western Digital has introduced a new encrypted mobile SSD from its G-Technology brand, which uses the newly developed ArmorLock encryption technology for the first time. This was developed to guarantee users the security of their data. Western Digital is targeting (as shown in the promotional video) professional applications such as film production companies who want to ensure that important data is only accessible to authorized team members.

The G-Technology ArmorLock SSD is protected by a very rugged case with IP67 dust/water resistance, up to 3 meters drop protection and 450kg pressure resistance and uses 256-bit AES-XTS hardware encryption to secure data. It has a storage capacity of 2 TB and transfers the data via USB 3.2 Gen 2 over the USB-C interface at rates of up to 1,000 MB/s.

A special feature of the new technology is the coupling of the hard disk encryption to an associated smartphone app (for the time being only for iOS and macOS), with the help of which the stored data can then be accessed wirelessly via Bluetooth using biometric authentication by face ID or fingerprint.

The hard disk is also set up via app, and other people can also be authenticated for data access by the main user sending them a QR code with user ID via email or messenger. The smartphone&s GPS function can also be used to track where the hard drive was last used.

The ArmorLock Encrypted SSD will soon be available at around 600 euros - the app required for intelligent encryption is, however, for the time being only available for iOS and MacOS. Versions for Android and Windows are to follow, but have yet to be released.

As an alternative to ArmorLock App, the encrypted data can also be unlocked in the classic way using a password. Western Digital has released a large part of the ArmorLock technology as open source, so other manufacturers can offer suitable solutions in the future.

New Western Digital My Passport SSD
Western Digital has also introduced a new mobile SSD from its My-Passport series. This comes in storage capacities of up to 2 TB and in four colors: gray, blue, red and gold. It also uses a USB 3.2 Gen2 interface, achieving read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/sMB/s im Glossar erklärt and write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s. Data can be password protected using 256-bit AES hardware encryption.

For the time being, only the gray color version of the My-Passport SSD is available with capacities of 500 GB (for about 150 Euro) and 1 TB (about 240 Euro). Models with the other colors and capacities will follow in the course of the year.
