Cooke Optics talks here with the authors of "The Cine Lens Manual" Jay Holben and Christopher Probst about "The Nature of Lens Character" with interesting insights. We find the statements about increasing camera sensor resolutions on the one hand and weaker vintage glass on the other hand particularly exciting. What do you consider to be the most important characteristics that define the "character" of a moving image lens? The highlight handling? Flares? The sharpness distribution or the bokeh? The choice of lens has at least as much influence on the look of the film as the choice of camera. The longing for an "analogue-organic film look" seems to become greater the more technically digital our lives become. While in analogue film times it was important to correct as many optical errors as possible in a cine lens, now aberrations, reduced contrast, loss of edge sharpness, flares, colour deviations, etc. are again being sought and in some cases newly built into the lens or retrofitted via filters.  |
