The new Sony FE 20-70 mm F4 G standard zoom lens offers a remarkably wide zoom range at a continuous F4 aperture. The compact (78.7 x 99 mm) and lightweight (488 g) zoom lens is said to offer precise focusing and seamless tracking of fast-moving subjects.

The optical design consists of 16 elements in 13 groups, including two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements, one aspherical element, three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, and one ED aspherical element. Both chromatic and spherical aberrations are said to be corrected, ensuring high optical performance throughout the zoom range. Optimized coatings are said to suppress unwanted light reflections and ghosting, and provide high contrast and excellent clarity.
The G Lens focus group is driven by two of Sony's latest XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors. These provide high thrust for fast, quiet and low-vibration focus drive. Thrust efficiency has been increased over previous models, which Sony says increases AF speed by up to 60 percent compared to the older SEL2470Z. Tracking performance is also said to be improved by about twice that of previous models.
The minimum focusing distance of the FE 20-70mm F4 G is 0.3 meters at the wide end and 0.25 meters at the telephoto end of the zoom range when using AF, and the maximum magnification is 0.39x. In manual mode, the focus responds linearly. Focus breathing, focus shift and optical axis shifts during zooming are said to be reduced thanks to the latest lens technologies.
The aperture unit has been redesigned and is said to significantly reduce noise and vibration. A dedicated aperture ring is provided, and the aperture is 9-lamellar.
Focus hold buttons are located in two places, and there is a focus selector switch on the side of the lens. Although the FE 20-70 mm F4 G is an ultra-wide angle lens, it is compatible with circular polarizing filters. In addition, the lens has an aperture lock that prevents accidental changes in exposure during shooting.
The zoom lens is dust and moisture resistant. The front element of the lens has a fluorine coating that protects against fingerprints, dust, water, oil and other contaminants.
The Sony FE 20-70 mm F4 G will cost 1,599 euros - the dollar price is significantly lower at . It should be available from February 2023.
