Some rumor sources, such as the Taiwanese media company Economic Daily, claim to have received more indications in the last few hours that MediaTek is planning to enter the Windows PC market together with Nvidia. Specifically, the idea is that Microsoft will also support ARM processors natively under Windows in the future. Until now, there has been an exclusive contract with Qualcomm for this, but it expires this year, opening the door for other manufacturers. It is unclear why Microsoft is extending its basically solid cooperation with Intel and AMD to even more manufacturers.
Originally, it was believed that Microsoft, with an envious eye on Apple, hoped that ARM CPUs would result in more energy-efficient notebooks that would run for longer. However, AMD and Intel now seem to be catching up with the upcoming CPUs in terms of battery life. Instead, Microsoft is now trying to differentiate the next generation of PCs with special AI accelerators (NPUs), which can also be found in current notebooks from AMD and Intel. And this is where the upcoming MediaTek/Nvidia cooperation comes into play: the two are also likely to launch an SoC combination of ARM CPU cores and Nvidia GPU cores for fast Windows notebooks. ![]() The partnership is expected to be officially announced next month. The Nvidia CEO made a separate announcement on June 2, one day before the press conferences and keynotes at Computex Taipei. In fact, the internet already knows that the finalization of the design and the tape-out of the processor is expected to take place in the third quarter of 2024. The market launch of the processor should then take place in a year at the latest and a price of around 300 US dollars is forecast for the processor. This should bring Nvidia closer to its goal of finally being able to get involved in AI inferencing in the mass PC market. So far, this has only worked with a dedicated Nvidia GPU, which is not found in most laptops sold. At the same time, such an Nvidia ARM APU would certainly be based on CUDA and rely on unified memory, which should ultimately also significantly accelerate video effects on the laptop. Ultimately, all of this amounts to a copy of Apple&s M hardware under Windows. However, AMD and Intel also have a similar unified memory platform with their SoCs presented at Computex. What is still missing, however, are locally running AI killer applications. The often cited background blur in video conferencing is unlikely to be sufficient as a USP for this... ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Windows KI-Laptops für den Massenmarkt - auch von MediaTek und Nvidia ab 2025? |
