Xiaomi and Sony have jointly developed a 1" image sensor that will be installed in the upcoming 12S Ultra smartphone. Xiaomi shared this as a teaser on the Chinese blogging site Weibo. The development cost for the IMX989 is said to be million and will be shared between the companies. In the future, the sensor will be offered to other smartphone manufacturers.
Unlike the Sony Xperia PRO-I, which also has a 1" sensor (Exmor RS), but unfortunately only uses a crop, the full sensor area is to be used in the 12S Ultra according to Xiaomi. The predecessor has a Samsung Isocell GN2 sensor with a surface of 1/1.2", which is also quite large.
However, there is not only a cooperation with Sony - in May, the strategic partnership of Xiaomi and Leica was announced. And so the 12S Ultra flagship smartphone will also be the first device with a "co-engineered with Leica" camera module. The smartphone will be officially unveiled on Monday (July 4).
