YouTube: less money for small channels

[14:44 Mon,22.January 2018   by Thomas Richter]

YouTube is changing its program guidelines with major implications, especially for small channels that have been able to earn some advertising money so far: since April 2017,10,000 (lifetime) views have been needed to qualify a channel for the YouTube Affiliate Program (YPP), i. e. the opportunity to earn money from advertising shown on YouTube in the video, these conditions are now being tightened. From now on, only those channels with at least 4,000 viewer hours in the last 12 months and at least 1,000 channel subscribers qualify. In practical terms, this means that the hurdles for earning money with YouTube are now significantly higher than before and that many small video producers are out of the Prtner program and cannot earn any more money.

From 20 February this regulation will also be applied to existing channels - those who do not meet these new conditions will be fired from the partner program and cannot earn any more money. New channels not only have to meet these requirements, they must also apply for inclusion in the YPP. Existing YPP partners can also be removed from the program at any time due to violations of YouTube and Adsense&s program policies. Google/YouTube justifies this step by saying that they want to better protect the (good) content creators from bad players.

Behind this lies the attempt to solve the problem of the angry advertisers on YouTube, who had to find out that their advertising was to be seen alongside inappropriate (terrorist, sexist, glorifying violence,...) videos and that some of them boycotted YouTube. YouTube&s attempts to automatically classify video into advertising capable/unsuitable video using algorithm hit relatively missing. YouTube wants to solve the basic problem of having to classify enormous amounts (300 hours per minute) of video content in a more traditional way: the overwhelming majority of video content no longer qualifies for advertising as the corresponding channel has too few views/subscribers.

The rest of the videos (only those that bring in the money) can then be seen by people (YouTube has announced to create up to 10,000 jobs for it) and can thus be more reliably qualified as suitable for advertising than by algorithms. In addition, this should also eliminate the incentive to generate views and thus income through videos with extreme content. However, YouTube also takes away the possibility of making money from the "long tail" of its producers. YouTube concentrates on the big producers with a lot of subscribers who make a lot of money for Google. According to YouTube, the new regulation mainly affects channels that have earned less than a year so far, but since the big, current YouTuber&s have also started small, the more difficult and tedious start until the first money is paid out could deter many new potential YouTube stars. It will show how the new regulation affects the creative climate and character of YouTube as a whole.
