ZEISS: Flares for Supreme Prime High-end film lenses: Supreme Prime Radiance

[11:12 Thu,7.November 2019   by Rob]

Zeiss uses the DOP-Festival Camerimage in Poland to present its new Supreme Prime Radiance Cine lens series. The Radiance lenses, which are based on the Zeiss high-end full-frame Supreme Prime series, feature controllable and consistent flares, which Zeiss has implemented with a newly developed coating called T* blue.

If you want to get a first impression of the (as we find quite chic) flare function of the Radiance lenses, you will find the corresponding Zeiss promotion video here:

Similar to the Supreme Primes, the new Supreme Prime Radiance lenses are also available as a set (but in addition to the 21mm) of seven fixed focal lengths between 21 and 100 millimetres, all of which have a maximum aperture of T1.5.

According to Zeiss, the special feature of the T* blue technology is the consistent production of flares over all focal lengths, controlled by appropriate lighting, and no loss of contrast or transmission thanks to the high-end coating.

With the new Supreme Prime Radiance lens series, Zeiss is likely to meet the wishes of many DOPs for more "character".

In addition to their flare behavior, the new lenses have the well-known advantages of the ZEISS Supreme Prime family: with an image circle diameter of 46.3 millimeters, they cover current large format cine sensors and are therefore compatible with current large format cine cameras such as Sony Venice, the ARRI Alexa LF, Mini LF or RED Monstro. Just like the Supreme Primes, the Radiance has a front diameter of 95 millimetres with a consistent position of focus and aperture rings. Zeiss indicates an average weight of approx. 1,500 grams.

The Radiane lenses are equipped with the ZEISS eXtended Data metadata technology introduced in 2017: In addition to the data of the Cooke /i technology1, they also record data on vignetting and distortion of the lens frame-accurately.
The ZEISS Supreme Prime Radiance can be ordered now and exclusively only until 31 March 2020. The seven focal lengths - 21 mm T1.5, 25 mm T1.5, 29 mm T1.5, 35 mm T1.5, 50 mm T1.5, 85 mm T1.5 and 100 mm T1.5 - are available exclusively in sets from ZEISS Cinema dealers. Delivery will take place after the end of the order phase from April 2020.
