Zeiss has just introduced its new, fast full-frame lens series called Nano Primes, which is aimed at users of mirrorless full-frame cameras. At launch, the interchangeable mount Zeiss Nano Primes support Sony E-mount cameras with full electronic mount support.
The Zeiss Nano Primes portfolio consists of six focal lengths: 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm, all of which have a fast T1.5. Thanks to the integrated electronic interface, metadata such as focal length, focus distance and aperture value are transmitted to the camera in real time.
Further lens data for distortion and vignetting can be accessed in the ZEISS CinCraft ecosystem and thus for post-production (CinCraft Mapper) as well as in the recently introduced CinCraft Scenario camera tracking system.
The Zeiss Nano Primes have consistent positioning of focus and aperture rings across all focal lengths. According to Zeiss, the calibrated and easy-to-read focus scales with a long focus rotation angle of 280° should enable particularly precise and smooth focussing. According to Zeiss, the aperture ring with 90° rotation and non-linear scales enables fine adjustment of the aperture opening.
Here is an overview of the specifications of the Zeiss Nano Primes:
In addition, the Nano Primes are prepared for easy replacement of additional mounts thanks to the ZEISS IMS (Interchangeable Mount System). Only four screws need to be loosened.
Zeiss is still keeping mum about future supported mounts - but we are very excited to see which other mirrorless systems Zeiss will support with the Nano Primes in the future. Should this also include comprehensive electronic support, as is the case with Sony E-mount, this should open up a very wide range of applications for the new Nano Primes ...
According to Zeiss, the Nano Primes are intended to "close the gap between entry-level and high-end lenses and thus enable all film-makers to create a cinematic look even in this price segment"
The ZEISS Nano Primes will be on show for the first time at the Micro Salon AFC in Paris (7-8 February) and at the BSC Expo in London (15-17 February). Interested parties are invited to bring their E-mount cameras with them so that they can record their own material and view it at home at their leisure.
The lenses can be ordered now. The six focal lengths - 18mm T1.5, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5, 75mm T1.5 and 100mm T1.5 - for E-mount cameras are available individually or as a complete set with lens case at a price of €23,000 (excl. VAT) from ZEISS Cinema dealers.
