Zoom has introduced its latest multi-track recorder, the R20. The Zoom R20 has 6 XLR inputs of which channels 5-8 offer phantom power for condenser microphones, which can be used for two channels at a time, as well as 2 XLR/jack combo inputs (one of them with Hi-Z option) and allows recording on 16 tracks, where 8 tracks can be recorded simultaneously. ![]() Zoom R20 Multi-Track Recorder
Recording is done to SD/SDXC cards with up to 1TB of storage. Thanks to its USB Type-C port, the R20 can also be used as an audio interface with 8 inputs and 4 outputs to Mac and Windows computers. The R20 also works with iOS devices, but there only two inputs and outputs each are available. A pair of 1/4" outputs and a stereo headphone jack are available for audio monitoring. Each of the 8 input channels offers a gain control, a rec knob, and a fader. Further hardware controls are a master fader and 6 buttons for transport control like play, stop, record, forward and rewind. The main control element, however, is the 4.3" color touchscreen, which Zoom has installed for the first time and which can be used for editing audio recordings like in a DAW, i.e. cutting, copying, moving or looping, by means of intuitive drag-and-drop, pinch and swipe gestures. ![]() Zoom R20 Multi-Track Recorder The individual tracks displayed on the touchscreen each have their own colors, which correspond to the respective input channels for better clarity. The R20 offers 150 internal rhythm patterns and supports conventional MIDI files to import and playback bass lines, melodies, piano parts, etc. to create backing tracks in a snap. In addition, it features an internal synthesizer with 18 sounds +1 drum kit playable via a MIDI keyboard connected via USB-C.
