After the mirrorless M50, Canon now also introduces a low-cost APS-C SLR camera with 4K video functions for the first time. The new EOS 250D has a lot in common with the popular EOS M50 except for the mirror. The data of the (very probably identical) 24.1 MPixel sensor are processed in both cameras by a current Digic 8 processor. Instead of the electronic OLED viewfinder, the 250D is equipped with an optical viewfinder.
Despite this mirror construction, the camera should remain surprisingly compact and lightweight. For the time being, however, Canon still owes an exact weight indication in the current data sheets. The EOS 250D (black/silver) is the lightest camera in the world among all DSLRs with an APS-C sensor and a rotating and swivelling touchscreen LCD.". And on the company&s website it is praised as Canon&s "lightest DSLR".
Much more important than the exact weight for most readers, of course, are the video functions: And unfortunately, the German press release and website are almost completely silent on the relevant points. The identical, international version Rebel SL3, however, strongly suggests that the video functions behave exactly like those of the EOS M50:
This would mean 4K video does not work with the dual-pixel autofocus and the sensor cutout used for this is below MicroFourThirds (KB cropping factor approx. 2.50). The 4K-framerate so far is only 25fps with h.264 inter-frame recording. In FullHD, up to 50p is possible, which works with the M50 even with full sensor readout with DualPixel AF. Due to the other similarities, we assume that this will also be the case with the Canon EOS 250D.
On the other hand, a histogram is already confirmed in the Live View as well as a manual tone control. There is an external microphone connector (3.5 mm mini jack), but no socket for headphones. So everything is the same as with the M50.
Even the prices are similar to its mirrorless sister: From 25 April 2019, the EOS 250D will be available in various kit versions:
