Intel: New 13th generation Raptor Lake HX, H, P and U mobile CPUs with up to 24 cores

Intel debuted its 13th-generation processors, dubbed Raptor Lake, in desktop CPU form at September 2022 - now they&ve been expanded to include a full range of mobile models. The new mobile CPUs include i3, i5, i7 and high-end i9 models in the Raptor Lake-HX, H, P and U series ranging from 35 to 55W PBP (Processor Base Power).

The top model of the newly launched HX series for mobile workstation is Intel&s Core i9-13980HX with 24 cores and a turbo frequency of 5.6 GHz - the first notebook CPU with 24 (8 performance and 16 efficiency) cores and according to Intel the fastest mobile processor in the world. The new CPUs support up to 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes, 2 DDR5 memory slots, up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports, Intel Wi-Fi 6/6E (Gig+) and Bluetooth 5.2.

The Raptor Lake-HX, H, P and U model lines target different application and performance areas from mobile workstation to ultra-thin laptop and differ in both the number of CPU cores, turbo and base clock, number of graphics units and power hunger, among other things. The new CPUs are backwards compatible and can thus be used cost-effectively with old 600 motherboards - provided a BIOS update. Also good for the wallet is the possibility to continue using DDR4 memory (with up to 3,200 MHz) as an alternative to the more expensive (and up to 6,400 MHz fast) DDR5 RAM - depending on the CPU model, up to 128 GB RAM is supported.

Am wichtigsten ist natürlich die Frage nach der Leistungssteigerung der neuen CPU-Generation im Vergleich zur 12ten Alder Lake Vorgängergeneration - Intel spricht bei den HX-CPUs von einer bis zu 11 Prozent schnellere Single-Thread-Leistung und einer bis zu 49 Prozent schnelleren Multitasking-Performance. Erreicht werden diese Steigerungen vor durch mehr Kerne und höhere Frequenzen sowie eine leicht verbesserte Architektur. So nutzen alle H-, P- und U-CPUs sowie die Modelle der HX-Serie mit mehr als 8 Effizienzkernen die neuen Raptor-Cove-Kerne der Raptor-Lake-Architektur - die übrigen HX-Modelle dagegen die alte Alder Lake Technologie.

Performance der HX-Serie

Die neuen High-End HX-CPUs für mobile Workstations verfügen nur über eine im Vergleich zur H-Serie kleine integrierte Grafikeinheit mit 32 bzw. 16 EUs, da hier auf dezidierte leistungsstarke Mobil-GPUs gesetzt wird. Sie besitzen aber 16 statt wie die anderen Modelle 8 PCIe-Gen5-Lanes und sind sehr erweiterungsfähig, zum Beispiel per Thunderbolt 4.
