Question of a layman, who is considering a new DV editing software to buy (my PC has Vista pre-installed): what is the real difference - apart from the price - between Premiere Pro 6.5 or 7 and CS4?

Final Cut Pro can not AVC (HD) transcodiert but in a different codec, which you have the main advantages of AVC lose.
If you want to do so AVC would be the first choice ADOBE CS4.
