Sony announces world'amp;s first CFexpress 2.0 Type A memory card for Sony A7s III

[09:23 thu,30.July 2020   by ]

Sony has introduced two suitable memory cards in tandem with the new Sony A7s III, which is the first camera to use the CFexpress 2.0 Type A format. Sony offers the new CFexpress Type A memory cards of the Tough series in two versions with 80 or 160 GB (CEA-G80T and CEA-G160T). They are designed to deliver high data transfer rates (with a maximum write speed of 700 MB/sMB/s im Glossar erklärt and read speeds of 800 MB/s), as well as durability and reliability.

The CFexpress 2.0 Type A memory cards are a slightly smaller and slower version of the widely used CFexpress Type B memory card. While Type B CFexpress cards are up to 2,000 MB/sMB/s im Glossar erklärt (1,600 Mbps) fast, Type A cards reach a maximum of 1,000 MB/sMB/s im Glossar erklärt (800 Mbps) according to the specification. The even larger Type C CFexpress cards can even be 4,000 MB/sMB/s im Glossar erklärt (3,200 Mbps) fast, but there are none on the market yet.

The different speeds are achieved by using additional PCIe lanes: if 1 lane is required for CFexpress type A, there are already two lanes for type B and four for type C.

For recording with the new Sony A7s III, which can work with SD UHS II and UHS as well as CFexpress Type A via dual card slots, the speed of the Type A cards with a write speed but loose enough.

With conventional SD cards, all video formats of the Sony A7S III can be recorded except one: If you want to record 4K 10 BitBit im Glossar erklärt 4:2:24:2:2 im Glossar erklärt in 100 fps (S&Q mode) with the new XAVC S-I (ALL-I Codec) (250 Mbit/s), you need the new CF Express Type A cards.

The following table gives an overview of the 4K / PALPAL im Glossar erklärt formats, frame rates and data rates of the A7S III together with the memory requirements (including the Slow&Quick recording option for slow and fast motion directly from the camera)

The new Sony CFexpress type A memory cards are equipped with a heat dissipator. This is made of a special Sony alloy with excellent thermal conductivity properties and dissipates the heat generated by the card during the rapid transfer of huge amounts of data. Users can therefore also film internal videos with 4K 120p over longer periods of time.

In accordance with Sony&s Tough specifications, the new CFexpress Type A memory cards have high flexural and shock resistance. The data is optimally protected even when frequently replaced in harsh conditions. The standard values for bending strength set for CFexpress Type A cards are exceeded by a factor of ten, and the impact value by a factor of five. In addition, thanks to their special internal construction, they achieve IPX7 against water ingress and IP5X against dust ingress - IP57 for increased durability.

Sony&s Memory Card File Rescue software for data recovery enables users to recover accidentally deleted RAW images and 4K video. In addition, Sony&s Media Scan Utility diagnostic software will be updated to allow users of CFexpress Type A cards to run diagnostics and receive alerts when the number of read/write cycles approaches the card&s limit.

The new CFexpress memory cards from Sony will cost 229 Euro (8ß GB model CEA-G80T) and 439 Euro (160 GB model CEA-G160T) and will be available from September 2020.

Sony MRW-G2: Card reader for SD cards and CFexpress type A cards

Sony is also announcing a card reader for the new CFexpress Type A cards to match the new memory card format. The SuperSpeed capable card reader MRW-G2 is designed for SD cards as well as CFexpress type A cards. With its USB-C connector it achieves a transfer speed of 10 Gbps per USB 3.2 Gen 2 SuperSpeed. The MRW-G2 card reader can be used for SDXC/SDHC cards (UHS-I and UHS-II) and CFexpress type A cards.

The Sony MRW-G2 card reader costs 139 Euro and will be on the market from September 2020.
